What is the One Act Play Festival ?
The One Act Play Festival is a little like a film festival, it consists of entries from all over Victoria, and performing one act plays from 20-50mins in length, of various genres. The plays start at lunch time on the Saturday and run through in sessions til the Sunday afternoon. The entries are guided by our terms and conditions (also on this website), they can enter original or published plays providing there are 2 actors or more. They compete for cash prizes which are allocated by our Adjudicator at the end of the festival.
It's a great showcase of what theatre companies across Victoria are producing. Anglesea has a reputation as the friendly festival, providing home cooked cafe, local wines, good heating and good old fashioned hospitality. Where else can you see three plays for around $10! The festival is well supported by local businesses, and at a usually quite time of year injects tourism back into the township. The Festival is run by volunteers who rely on the support of the local community to attend this wonderful event. One Act Play Festivals run all over Victoria from July – September, the Victorian Drama League website provides an extensive list of festivals and contacts in this state.

As a theatre director he has worked with school, amateur and pro-am groups, a highlight being Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd” for Geelong Lyric. That production won six MusicTheatre Guild of Victoria Awards including Best Direction, the first time a Geelong musical has enjoyed such success. Doug’s production of “Ruby Moon” for Geelong Repertory received similar acclaim. Other directing credits include the works of Shakespeare and Sophocles, verse drama, English farce, and numerous musicals for the various schools at which he has worked. As a writer of commissioned, adapted and original works he has produced history plays and re-enactments, dramas, comedies, musicals and theatre restaurant pieces. The epic tale “The Wreck of the Admella” was recently re-commissioned for a Portland historical festival . The musical “The Tribe” has been produced by numerous schools around Victoria. |
He adapted St.Exupery’s “The Little Prince” for junior performance and combined the “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” with epic verse drama to produce something new with “Fire in the Mariner’s Eye”, winner of Geelong PAC’s Best Production award. Adaptations of “Antigone” and “Twelfth Night” were similarly successful. He has written film documentary for SBS television.
As company director of Black Ibis he has combined the roles of writer, actor, designer, director, producer and entrepreneur, working with talented Geelong and Melbourne artists. Black Ibis co-sponsored with Montsalvat Players an all star cast performance of “Under Milkwood”. The company has forged unique partnerships with the National Trust, Barwon Water and other local organisations to present theatrical entertainments and re-enactments, including Barwon Grange’s sesquicentennial celebrations.
